NuScale stock soars on US Army initiative: is it too late to buy SMR shares?

by admin October 15, 2025
October 15, 2025

NuScale Power Corp (NASDAQ: SMR) rallied more than 20% today after the US Army launched a new initiative aimed at deploying micro nuclear reactors.

Dubbed the “Janus Program” – this new initiative is designed to accelerate the development and commercialization of advanced reactor technologies – an area where SMR leads the packs.

NuScale stock has been a lucrative investment this year, and is currently up more than 300% versus its year-to-date low in the first week of April.

Why US Army announcement is positive for NuScale stock

SMR stock soared following the Janus Program news on Wednesday because it reinforces growing confidence in nuclear energy’s role in national security and clean power generation.

By partnering with the Defense Innovation Unit – the Army aims to deploy microreactors that are  privately owned and operated, creating a real-world testing ground for businesses like NuScale.

Plus, the initiative’s alignment with President Trump’s executive orders which mandate operational reactors at military bases by 2028 adds urgency and credibility as well.

For NuScale, which already holds regulatory approval for its SMR design – this new programme could fast-track deployment timelines and unlock defense-related contracts.

Investors are reading this as more than symbolic.

For them, it’s a meaningful step toward revenue-generating applications, validating NuScale’s business model and reducing execution risk.

US-China trade tensions could push SMR shares higher

Beyond the Army’s backing, renewed trade friction between Washington and Beijing is amplifying investor interest in domestic energy solutions.

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions, the US is prioritizing energy independence and supply chain security – segments where NuScale’s technology fits rather perfectly.

Its reactors are designed and manufactured in the US, making them attractive alternatives to foreign-sourced energy infrastructure.

This strategic positioning could lead to increased federal support, export opportunities, and long-term contracts with utilities and data centers.

With artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing driving massive power demand, SMR ability to deliver reliable, clean energy without relying on international partners makes it a standout in a volatile global landscape.

This structural tailwind warrants looking beyond near-term valuation concerns in NuScale shares.

Should you invest in NuScale at current levels?

NuScale’s small modular reactor isn’t just innovative – it’s actually the only design in the country that has so far received approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

That regulatory milestone gives it a first-mover advantage in a sector where safety validation is notoriously slow.

Unlike traditional nuclear plants, SMR’s reactors are compact, modular, and scalable – ideal for remote installations and industrial use.

Moreover, they outperform renewables like wind and solar in reliability, offering uninterrupted power regardless of weather conditions.

This consistency is critical for data centers, military bases, and other high-demand applications.

All in all, as clean energy mandates expand, the firm’s blend of regulatory clearance, technological edge, and strategic relevance makes NuScale stock valuation look increasingly justified.
