Apple chip chief Johny Srouji rejects exit rumors

Apple’s senior leadership ranks are undergoing their most significant upheaval in years, even as one of the company’s most influential executives sought to halt speculation about his own future.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies and longtime leader of its custom silicon efforts, told employees he has no plans to depart.

“I love my team, and I love my job at Apple, and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon,” Srouji wrote in a memo to staff on Monday.

His comments followed a report from Bloomberg that he had informed Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook he was considering stepping down, citing sources.

Srouji, who joined Apple in 2008, oversees the development of the company’s M-series and A-series chips — technologies that have enabled Apple to move away from Intel processors and have become central to its product differentiation.

His teams have also been working on an in-house cellular modem intended to replace Qualcomm components in upcoming iPhones.

Srouji is a frequent presenter at Apple launch events, underscoring his prominence within the company’s engineering organization.

In his memo, Srouji addressed the wave of speculation directly. “I know you’ve been reading all kind of rumors and speculations about my future at Apple, and I feel that you need to hear from me directly,” he wrote.

“I am proud of the amazing Technologies we all build across Displays, Cameras, Sensors, Silicon, Batteries, and a very wide set of technologies, across all of Apple Products.”

High-profile departures intensify scrutiny

Srouji’s reassurance comes at a moment of heightened volatility within Apple’s upper ranks.

In the past week alone, the company’s head of artificial intelligence, John Giannandrea, stepped down.

Two days later, Apple announced the departure of Alan Dye, its head of user interface design, who is joining Meta.

Soon after, the company confirmed the retirement of general counsel Kate Adams and the exit of Lisa Jackson, vice president for environment, policy and social initiatives.

Both executives reported directly to Cook. Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams also retired this fall.

The concentration of departures has raised questions about leadership stability at a company long celebrated for internal cohesion and continuity. Apple is simultaneously contending with setbacks in generative AI development.

Its Apple Intelligence platform has faced delays and underwhelming performance, while a major overhaul of Siri is now roughly a year and a half behind schedule.

The revised software is expected to rely heavily on a partnership with Alphabet’s Google to address feature gaps.

Against that backdrop, Giannandrea began transitioning out of his role in March, according to media reports, though he will remain at the company until next spring.

Employees had long anticipated his eventual departure, with some expressing surprise internally that he stayed as long as he did.
